The Melvin Jones International MemorialJones International Memorial celebrated its annual rededication on January 11, 2003. This 50 foot obelisk was constructed in 1965, and since that time has become a focal point for Lions to rededicate themselves to service.

As Janet Soto of Globe Arizona explained. “Coming here gives us a reaffirmation to keep on doing what we do.”

At this year’s ceremony 2003-04 International President Dr. Tae-Sup Lee spoke to the gathered crowd. “The Melvin Jones Memorial has a deep and special meaning for Lions all over the world.” he said. “Melvin Jones still serves as inspiration and a beacon of hope for what we want to achieve. He taught us that unselfishness can be the greatest force in any country.”

After his speech, President Lee presented the memorial with a pledge for $31,700 from the Lions of Korea.

A fundraising effort is now underway to expand the Melvin Jones Museum, a one room facility filled with Melvin Jones related artifacts that is currently open only on rededication days. The planned improvements would turn a 20 acre parcel of land into a park that would encompass a much larger museum building.

The Melvin Jones International Memorial is located in his birthplace of Fort Thomas, Arizona. It is rededicated every winter on the Saturday closest to January 13, Jones birth date.
