Fort Thomas, Arizona, is a small community, but one that proudly calls itself the birthplace of Lionism. Melvin Jones, the founder of Lions Clubs International, was born on a military out-post there. Each year, people gather around the impres-sive monument erected in his honor, remembering his vision and commitment to humanitarian service.

At the 33rd Annual Melvin Jones Lions International Monument (MJLIM) Rededication Ceremony, held January 12, International President J. Frank Moore III spoke of the important role Lions clubs play in the future of youth.

“We must continue to make a difference in the lives of young people,” President Moore emphasized. “Youth activity is our number one concern. If we don’t accept that responsibility, there will be someone else to lead them, and it may not be down the path we would have chosen.”

The rededication ceremony is a grand affair. In 2002, a local Boy Scout troop presented the colors in a solemn procession and the national anthems of the Unit-ed States, Canada and Mexico were sung by Sun Lakes Lion Flora Danylchuk. A flurry of purple and gold bal-loons marked the end of the ceremony. Guests were invited to tour the Melvin Jones Memorial museum, also located at the site.

At a luncheon following the ceremony, special awards were presented to three long-time Lions for their commitment to the memorial project. Lion Bill Lewis, the driving force behind the fundraising efforts for the memorial, received a Melvin Jones Fellowship from the Safford Lions Club. Lion Roger David, who designed the monument, and Lion Emile Galandi, who added the sculptural features, were presented with crystal Lions to recognize their achievements.

In addition to President Moore, many Lions digni-taries were present. Past International President W. R. “Dick” Bryan and Past International Directors Joe Preston and Dr. Bud Danylchuk were joined by Past District Gov-ernor Joe Talvy, the MJLIM Committee president.

According to Past Director Danylchuk, plans are underway to transmit live broadcasts of future rededica-tion ceremonies to Lions clubs around the world.

Hundreds of purple and gold balloons were released to celebrate the memorial’s 33rd
rededication event.
